HLM Architects, the award-winning practice with studios in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland, has announced the launch of a new design studio in Plymouth. The expansion strengthens its UK footprint and marks the firm’s seventh location, joining Sheffield, London, Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin.
The Plymouth office, based in creative workspace Alma Yard, marks a return for HLM, which previously operated in the city until 2018. The practice has designed several notable projects locally, including Whitleigh Education Campus, Chamberlain House at Plymouth Science Park, the Marine Station at Coxside, and Brannell School in Cornwall.
In recent years, HLM has also provided strategic support to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, the Royal Navy at HMNB Devonport, and wider defence sector initiatives across the South West.
The new studio will be led by Kay Hanson, who returns to HLM after 14 years with the practice. Hanson, who has lectured at Arts University Plymouth and the University of Plymouth, is also active in the South West Women in Construction committee.
Michael Scherdel, Managing Director of HLM Architects, said: “We’ve seen a significant rise in opportunities across the South West, so returning to Plymouth feels like a very natural step for the business and reflects our confidence in the region. With major investment and regeneration underway, we’re looking forward to playing a role in shaping the region’s future and continuing to build on our strong relationships here.”
