Kiernan Milling, one of Ireland's largest animal feed producers, has lodged a planning application with Longford County Council for the construction of a new files and samples storage building at its site in Granardkille, Granard, as reported by Longford Live.

The proposed new building will be located adjacent to the company's existing bag store and warehouse on the Granardkille site. A decision on the application from Longford County Council is expected by 8 September.

The mill was established in 1979 and is located in Granard, Co. Longford, producing a wide range of products for the agricultural industry. The family-run business supplies animal feed across the pig, poultry, dairy, beef, sheep, horse, and goat sectors and holds HACCP registration alongside independent annual auditing under the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme.

In June 2007, Kiernan Milling purchased Stewarts Animal Feeds, based in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, which has a strong market share in Connacht, the Midlands, and the North-East. The acquisition extended the company's distribution footprint across a broad swathe of rural Ireland.

McSherry designed and built all electrical systems for Kiernan's newer 80-tonne-per-hour feed mill, which produces pellet and coarse feeds for the ruminant and pig industry. The investment in that facility reflected the company's stated focus on innovation in milling processes and nutritional research.

The Granardkille planning application follows a pattern of incremental infrastructure investment at the site. In 2019, the company added a new mill with capacity to produce an additional 200,000 tonnes, coinciding with its 40th anniversary.

The new storage building forms part of continued site development at Kiernan Milling's primary production facility, consolidating operational capacity at its long-established Longford base as demand for quality-assured animal feed products across Ireland's agricultural sector remains sustained.

Longford County Council is expected to return a decision on the planning application by 8 September.
