SDS Design Engineers and Lidl Ireland have taken two of the most prestigious honours at the Building and Architect of the Year Awards 2026, winning both Building of the Year and Building of the Year Net Zero and Passive House for Ireland's First Net Zero Energy Supermarket. It is a result that reflects the exceptional scale of the project's ambition and the rigour with which that ambition has been delivered.

The judges praised the project for "setting a new benchmark in commercial sustainability," a verdict that carries particular weight given the scale at which the retail sector operates in Ireland. By establishing a credible and verifiable Net Zero standard, SDS Design Engineers and Lidl Ireland have done something more significant than delivering one outstanding building. They have demonstrated that Net Zero performance in commercial retail is achievable, measurable, and ready to be replicated across an entire network.

The technical strategy underpinning that achievement is comprehensive. Solar generation, battery storage, and a clear demand reduction strategy work together as an integrated system rather than a collection of individual sustainability measures. The result is a building that does not simply offset its energy use but fundamentally redesigns its relationship with energy from the ground up, a distinction that separates genuine Net Zero performance from schemes that use the language without meeting the standard.

What elevates this project above its technical credentials, however, is its replication potential. The judges noted the scheme's scalability and resilience as defining qualities, recognising that a sustainable building delivering impact at one site is commendable, but a model that can be deployed across a retail network represents a transformation of an entirely different order. In taking both Building of the Year and the Net Zero and Passive House category, the judges have signalled that this is precisely the kind of work the awards exist to elevate.
