Waterford City and County Council has approved a €30 million investment to secure the future of Waterford Airport, led by a confidential US investor via Waterford Airport Ltd. The funding will support a major redevelopment programme, including a runway extension of over 2,000 metres and widening to 45 metres, enabling large aircraft and the return of commercial passenger services by late 2027.

The project is expected to accommodate up to 400,000 passengers annually by 2032 and will create more than 100 construction jobs, with additional roles as scheduled air traffic begins. The investment also ensures the continuation of existing Search and Rescue services for the next decade.

Approval included the disposal of council lands, waiver of a previous €670,000 loan, and the elimination of the council’s annual financial subvention that has been in place since 2016. The investment will undergo FDI screening under the Third Country Transactions Act 2023 before proceeding.

Council and regional leaders emphasise the project’s transformative impact, positioning Waterford as a commercially viable regional airport. It is expected to enhance regional connectivity, attract inward investment, support high-value employment, and strengthen tourism, contributing to balanced regional development and quality of life in the South-East.

William Bolster of Bolster Group described the approval as a “vital infrastructure project” that will secure and expand local jobs, while the Mayor and CEO hailed the decision as a historic milestone for the region.
