Construction has commenced on a new £10m (€11.7m) school building for Mary Queen of Peace Primary School in County Antrim, marking a significant education infrastructure project aimed at modernising teaching facilities and consolidating operations onto a single site. For the building and architecture sector, the scheme reflects continued investment in purpose-built educational environments designed to improve functionality, accessibility and long-term community value.
Belfast Telegraph reported that the development will deliver nine new classrooms and reunite the school after operating across split locations. The project is intended to provide a modern campus environment that supports teaching, learning and operational efficiency for staff and pupils.
The new building forms part of wider investment in education estates across Northern Ireland, where school design increasingly prioritises flexible learning environments, operational resilience and improved space utilisation. Campus consolidation projects are also being used to reduce fragmentation and create more integrated educational settings for local communities.
Paul Givan said: “Today marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for Mary Queen of Peace Primary School and the wider community of Glenravel.”
He added: “Providing inspiring environments for teaching and learning is a key factor in supporting our children to thrive. This investment will deliver lasting benefits for years to come, ensuring Mary Queen of Peace can deliver high quality education for generations to come.”
Principal Malachy Conlon said: “Today is a momentous occasion in the history at Mary Queen of Peace Primary School. Our new school is the result of years of hard work, planning and teamwork.”
Construction is expected to conclude by July 2027, with the completed development designed to support future student demand while strengthening the school’s role as a community asset in Glenravel.
